It was constructed in 1430 A.D by Sir William de Borthwick, son of the 2nd Earl of Borthwick and Beatrice Sinclair (whose marriage united the clans). It’s a formidable construction, boasting 15-foot-wide walls and stone turrets. The medieval-influenced interiors include a 40-foot-long main hall and the 12 unique bedchambers.
While generations of Borthwick and Sinclair clan members lived here, the castle’s most famous residents were Mary, Queen of Scots and her beau, Lord Bothwell. In June 1567, when the castle was surrounded by over 1000 armed men, Mary successfully escaped in disguise and rode on horseback to safety.
In 1650, the castle was attacked by Oliver Cromwell and his parliamentarians. Once captured, the 10th Lord Borthwick was removed and the Borthwick family never returned. Blasts from the cannon can still be seen today.
It’s history continued long into this century as the castle took on a variety of rolls. Perhaps its most important happened during WWII when was used as a safe store for the country's national treasures.
