BORTHWICK CASTLE
about
We are thrilled to be hosting our event at Borthwick Castle, situated 40 minutes from Edinburgh. It was constructed in 1430 A.D by Sir William de Borthwick, son of the 2nd Earl of Borthwick and Beatrice Sinclair (whose marriage united the clans). It’s a formidable construction, boasting 15-foot-wide walls and stone turrets. The medieval-influenced interiors include a 40-foot-long main hall, a tower level garrison and and a grand state room that overlooks the rolling meadows and woodland.
While generations of Borthwick and Sinclair clan members lived here, the castle’s most famous regular guests were Mary, Queen of Scots and her much disliked beau, Lord Bothwell. In June 1567, as the castle was surrounded by over 1000 armed men, Bothwell fled and left her to fend for herself. Mary successfully escaped by lowering herself out of a window and rode on horseback in disguise to safety. Alas, two weeks later she would be captured and spend the rest of her life locked away, making Borthwick castle her last refuge. Mary’s portrait and arrest warrant, signed by Elizabeth I, hangs next to the window that provided her a last chance at freedom.
In 1650, the castle was attacked by Oliver Cromwell and his parliamentarians. Once captured, the 10th Lord Borthwick was removed and the Borthwick family never returned. Blasts from the cannon can still be seen today.
It’s history continued long into this century as the castle took on a variety of rolls. Many artists have stayed here including Sir Walter Scott, inventor of the historical novel and the painter JM Turner. Perhaps its most important happened during WWII when was used as a safe store for the country's national treasures.
You can learn more about Borthwick Castle here.
NB. Don’t ask to see the basement dungeon as they may still be occupied!!
